Each year, Nelson South hosts its Club Champs meet. This meet is only open to Nelson South club members.  Our swimmers compete against each other in age groups and the male and female swimmer who accrues the most points in each age category is the winner of the Club's age group trophies which are awarded at the Club's Prizegiving held at the end of the Summer Season.  The long distance events were held on Friday night with the main program swum over 2 sessions on Saturday.

This year 51 swimmers took part, ranging in age from 8 years to 20 years!  For the first time in quite a few years, every age group, both male and female, from 9 years and under to 16 years and over were contested - so all age group trophies will be awarded for the 2015-2016 season.

Zara Aydon continued her strong swimming from the Young Guns meet with 3 pb's from 5 swims including 44.06 seconds off her 800m free time.  Hannah Martin is another consistent swimmer who swam well to record 5 pb's from 7 swims, and Aidan Patchett showed good form to notch up 3 pb's from 4 swims.

The biggest pb of the meet was won by Ellie Rukuwai for taking 81.49 seconds off her 1500m free time along with 23.13 seconds off her 200m fly time.  Would it be rude of the writer to suggest that it had been quite a few years (or more) since both events were last swum??? :-)

Some big pb's coming from the shorter distance events included Jett Persico taking a whopping 40.12 seconds off his 200m free time; Emily Bryant knocking 22.09 seconds from her 200m free time and Ollie Taylor taking 20.89 seconds off his 100IM time!  Well done to all our swimmers who took part in this meet.

Full results can be found here.

There were 16 new club records set at the meet so congratulations to the following swimmers (nb. some of the records were broken by 2 swimmers but the quickest time will be the official new record):

Skye Humphries - Female 10 & under 100 fly; 200IM

Ruby-Lou Stuart - Female 13-14 200 fly

Ellie Rukuwai - Female 17 & over 100 free; 800 free; 200 back (previous record was set in 2001); 100 breast; 200 fly; 100IM and 200IM (previous record set in 2000 - so the writer better take back the comments above!)

Samantha Trevurza - Female 17 & over 800 free; 100 back; 100 fly (previous record was set in 1999); and 100IM

Daniel Trevurza - Male 13-14 800 free

Jett Persico - Male 13-14 800 free

All in all it was a great day (and a half) of swimming which concluded with the hotly contested relays between Team Luke and Team Ellie.  2 relays were swum, and in a fitting end to the day, each team won 1 race so the contest was a draw :-)  A social bbq at the end of the meet was then enjoyed by swimmers and parents!
