Nelson South Takes Up The Challenge

2017 Nags team from L:  Georgie Trengroe, Ruby-Lou Stuart, Clara Foster, Kaleb Johnston, Rebecca Loach, Matai McGuinniety

Nelson South sent a team of 6 to Wellington to compete at the NZ National Age Group Championships.  Coach Glen Findlay reports on a successful week.

750 of New Zealand’s top age group swimmers went into battle at the Wellington Aquatic Centre in late March.  Nelson South had a team of 6 swimmers with Georgie, Ruby-Lou, Clara, Matai, Kaleb and Rebecca all making the high standard to compete for their club and region at 2017 NAGS.

We had a great meet with our 6 swimmers producing 14 top 10 finishes over the week along with 3 medal performances and 1 Nelson Marlborough record.

Some of the highlights included

Clara hitting the podium winning Silver in the 17-18 year old 50 breaststroke and backing that up with a bronze in the 100 breaststroke.

Matai produced a fantastic performance in the 16 year old 50 butterly, breaking the region's record in the heats and lowering it again in the final to take the Gold Medal.  This was the regions only title for the meet.

Rebecca set an SNM record to qualify for NAGS and it is rare for 12-year old to make this tough 13-year-old standard so keep your eye out for Rebecca at next years NAGs when she will race swimmers her own age!!

Kaleb improved his rankings with long course pbs in all 3 backstroke events and has set a strong platform for coming seasons.

Ruby-Lou and Georgie produced 8 top 10 swims between them with Ruby-Lou swimming a great pb in the 200-butterfly final to finish 6th.

This was a fun and challenging week.  Congratulations to all our team members who represented Nelson South with pride. Swimming and improving at this level requires a good 20 weeks of consistent hard work and dedication.  This is just to create an opportunity for success. Well done swimmers on taking your opportunity!
