Congratulations to our NZSC team who competed in Auckland at the beginning of October:
Clara Foster, Matai McGuinniety, Georgie Trengrove, Xavier Anderson, Jacob Northage, Ruby-Lou Stuart, Ilaria Old, Nic Hall, Reuben Lile and Rebecca Loach.
And thanks to Team Manager - Susie Foster for providing a meet report:
Clara Foster and Matai McGuinniety both had an outstanding five days at the national meet. Both swimmers recorded numerous personal best and were also multiple qualifiers for the evening's Open Finals.
Clara received the bronze medal for the 50m breaststroke in the 17/18 year old age group and qualified for the Open A final where she recorded her fastest ever time. Clara also finished in the top ten in her age group in the 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke and qualified for the Open finals in all five of her races. Clara also broke the Nelson Marlborough open record in the 50m free and age group record in the 50m fly.
Matai had a spectacular match up against Tasman's Sam Mackenzie in the Open C final of the 100m fly. Seeded side by side in the outside lanes, the two local swimmers led the race from start to finish, with the lead yo-yoing between them. Sam took an early lead at 25m but Matai pulled ahead at the halfway mark. At 75m Matai was still ahead however Sam just managed to out touch Matai at the wall. Matai shaved 2 seconds off his personal best time and both swimmers went under the Nelson Marlborough open record time. Matai also qualified for 5 Open finals and broke Nelson Marlborough age group records in the 50 and 100m fly.
Georgie and Jacob both did personal bests in the 50m and 200m breaststroke and qualified for the evening finals. In the 200m fly Xavier and Ruby-Lou both finished in the top ten for their age group and also qualified for the open finals. Xavier also broke the Nelson Marlborough age group record for the 200m fly.
We also had 4 younger swimmers at the meet who were competing at this competition for the first time. Reuben made the top ten for his age group in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, Rebecca finished in the top ten in the 50m breast, Nic recorded an astonishing 26 second personal best to finish in the top ten in the 1500 freestyle and Ilaria was in the top ten in the 800 freestyle.
All up it was a very successful and exciting week of racing :-)
